Ramayana pg. 62-89:

Encounters in Exile:

Rama meets Ravana's sister, Soorpanaka, who is disguised as a beautiful maiden. Soorpanaka states that she is in love with Rama and wants to marry him. Rama refuses her and states many reasons as why there union would not work. Soorpanaka sees Sita and becomes jealous. She lets her guard down and shows her true form, frightening Sita. Rama warns Soorpanaka to leave before Lakshmana came back from the wilderness. Soorpanaka decides to kill Sita, but Lakshmana finds out and cuts of her nose. In a fit of rage, Soorpanaka goes to her brother, Kara to wage war against Rama. However, Rama defeats Kara.

Soorpanaka tells Ravana of what Rama and Lakshmana did to her. Soorpanaka tells Ravana about Sita and her beauty to make Ravana jealous. Ravana falls madly in love with Sita's description and decides to have her. Ravana goes to his uncle Mareecha to ask him how to get Sita. Mareecha warns him not to mess with Rama, but Ravana refuses to listen to him. Ravana tells Mareecha to disguise himself as a golden deer to distract Sita so that he can capture her. Sita sees the golden deer and asks Rama to bring it to her. Rama agrees, but Lakshmana warns him that the deer is a maya (illusion). Thinking that Rama is in trouble, Sita forces Lakshmana to go after him. While Lakshmana is looking for Rama, Ravana goes to Sita's house disguised as a sanyasi.

Ravana tells Sita that he loves her and wants to be with her, but Sita refuses him. Ravana lifts the ground underneath Sita and takes her away. Jatayu, an eagle and guardian, tells Ravana to leave Sita, but Ravana kills Jatayu. Rama and Lakshmana begin to look for Sita.
